Seeking walkers, runners, cyclists, and paddlers to carry the voices of the Mississippi River region downstream.
WHAT: Relay of Voices is a pedestrian relay down the Mississippi River Trail, carrying the voices of individuals from 104 river communities along the way.
WHEN: July 9-November 5, 2019 (specifics).
WHERE: The Mississippi River Trail — Start: Headwaters (Lake Itasca, MN); Finish: Mouth of the River (Venice, LA)
WHO: Looking for surrogate walkers, runners, cyclists or paddlers—anyone interested in covering some or all of the distance charted for a day of the Relay.
WHY: Relay of Voices is spearheaded and organized by Victoria Bradford Styrbicki, social choreographer and athlete. As Executive and Artistic Director of the non-profit A House Unbuilt, Victoria is using Relay of Voices to explore the physical, cultural, emotional, and historical connectedness of the Mississippi River Region, especially the rootedness individuals and communities feel in the land and water that shape their homes and environment. Relay is using the body to listen to the land and the people.
HOW: With nearly three years of planning, outreach, and fundraising, Relay of Voices is nearly ready to launch. Every day of the Relay, Bradford will cover between 20-40 miles on foot or on bike with the support of a relay team made up of surrogate walkers, runners, cyclists or paddlers. After each day’s travel, Victoria will stop in one of the 104 partner communities to interact one-on-one with local residents. Stories from those experiences will be shared at evening performance events with local residents and more conversations and interactions will be accumulated.
