Application for Entry to The Great River Run, Entry Fee: $50

Download the A Relay of Voices: The Great River Run Mobile Application

How the App Works:

RUN: Plot a starting point with gps and log the miles you run from that point to whatever point you stop along the Great River Road.

RELAY: Add more to your original mileage number by starting where you left off and running more again the next day (and the next...). All your miles contribute to the total miles run toward the ever receding coastline.

SHARE: You can select a story you find on the map from one location, carrying it with you to the next—changing up the conversation, the landscape, relaying stories downstream in the virtual space just like A House Unbuilt dancers are doing in the physical space.

SPEAK: You can pause after your run and and audio record a narrative or conversation based on a set of prompts. Carry this conversation with you on your next run, or leave it for someone else to find and carry forward.

LISTEN: Hear the voices along the Great River Road.

How much can I push myself? How much rest is appropriate—and how much is too much? How far can I take something and still keep it decent and consistent? When does it become narrow-minded and inflexible? How much should I be aware of the world outside, and how much should I focus on my inner world? To what extent should I be confident in my abilities, and when should I start doubting myself?
— Haruki Murakami, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running

  • You won't get a bib number—this isn't about your PR or personal best, it's about setting a record as a community.
  • You're not running FOR a cause—this run IS the cause. The work of this run, connecting from community to community, relaying voices, uniting individuals in a mass movement across the continent—this is the cause that will make a difference and make change.
  • You can be ready for a marathon or a 5K—Every mile counts on The Great River Road. Whatever you can give, and if you can give it again, and again, and again, all the better. Give us a mile every day for a week and we'll take it or a marathon every day for a month and we'll take that too.
  • Running Alone or Together, the Great River Road is open to you. Just Run.
